Thursday 8th March – travel and walks *** cloudy, cool start but sunny and warm later.

Had loads of rain in the night in our spot at Villajoyosa sud and woke to a cool and cloudy morning. Mag still managed her early morning walk as the drizzle had just stopped. Then set off North again, reached Benidorm really quickly and made Mags day (not!!) by stopping for a quick walk, parking in the same spot and doing the same walk as last year. To be honest a visit to Benidorm once in a lifetime is enough, twice is definitely too much especially as it was cloudy and cool still:( It just seems full of fat oafs taking selfies and swearing and that’s just the girls! The wave shape prom was busy with wrapped up OAP’s, double mobility scooters and samba classes on the beach. We had a quick trip out to the end of the harbour wall as the sun made an appearance. Mag enjoyed a huge group of people singing Spanish songs on the beach – it is the good thing about Benidorm – the community spirit for older people :) We had a look at the view from the Mirador before heading back through the narrow streets of the old town past the seedy sex shops:( We were glad to get back to the van and leave this hell-hole behind! Sadly, it was slow going towards Calpe. It is a pretty route through the hills here and we stopped just short of Denia for lunch. Mag then drove on through hooker heaven, no wonder those OAP’s come here, they must be exhausted!!!! But no way for a young girl to make a living:( It was getting on a bit after our Benidorm detour so after passing the interesting Cullera with its castle on the hill, Faro and many tall apartments! We enter the Parc Natural de L’Albufera and find a dead-end road along the beach with several carparks. Luckily all the white elephants are crammed into one which left us one all to ourselves:) Cuppa and cake, and a nice walk on the beach. We had a visit from the local police who took our van number and said we could stop for one night (exactly what we want anyway). At last some good news, we got a good quote from Saga for breakdown cover so hopefully we can tell the RAC where to go and then Kiers are looking for Traffic Management people again so looks like I will get some work when I get home!

Friday 9th March – Relax and travel – sunny and warm start but misty cool end.

Good night in a carpark by ourselves at Platja de La Garrofera a few miles short of Valencia. Another nice sunrise, we both do our exercises in the warm sunshine, then breakfast and set off up the coast. We see a cruise liner in the port in Valencia so head there for a closer look, the waterfront is very nice, several old dock buildings, a marina and nice beach. We follow the coast out of Valencia until we find the red road which is motorway standard all the way to Castello de la Plana where we join the old faithful N-340 only a two-lane road but you could do 60 no problem despite the huge number of lorries all avoiding paying the motorway toll! Mag takes over the driving and we soon reach Saint Carlos for a Lidl and then it’s out onto the Delta de l’Ebre to the Platja de Trabucador, we drove out along the sand road to the salt workings. Then, again, ignoring the no overnight parking sign we parked at the spot we did on the way down with great views across the Port dels Alfacs - a huge sheltered bay which would be great for windsurfing if the wind blew! It was sunny when we arrived but a funny mist rolled in and the mountains on the mainland disappeared - in fact at times nearly everything went! Lunch followed by relaxing reading, watching the birds and dozing. Quieter here this time but then again, the weather is cool and misty, I think a couple more small campers are staying and a caravan so hopefully we will be alright.
